Welcome to Helena Mira laboratory website

Our laboratory is interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate neural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult mammalian brain. Our current emphasis is on the aging perspective. We explore both cell intrinsic and cell extrinsic (niche) contributions to the aging phenotype. Our main goal is to understand: 1) How NSCs are activated from their quiescent state to give rise to new neurons in the adult and aged brain; 2) How fate choices of the stem cell progeny are determined in the adult and aged brain; 3) Whether such processes can be used for brain repair in age-related neurodegenerative diseases. We are also characterizing the function of certain NSC intrinsic factors in the de-regulation of glioma cancer stem cells.

We are part of the Chronic Disease Programme at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), Madrid, Spain. Our lab is located on the Majadahonda Campus of the ISCIII.
